Visit to Ukraine invited by ALDE Party Vice-President Kira Rudik
On 16-17 March I visited Ukraine's capital Kyiv, invited by ALDE Party Vice-President and member of the Ukrainian Parliament Kira Rudik. As a fellow woman in politics, I have nothing but admiration for this courageous politician.
We discussed the state of play of the Ukraine war while witnessing the destruction of the neighbouring cities of Irpin and Bucha. Bucha was the victim of a mass murder of Ukrainian civilians and prisoners by Russian armed forces in April 2022. According to local authorities, 458 bodies were recovered from the town, including nine children under the age of 18. Irpin suffered a similar situation with a mass massacre that killed 269 citizens.
We also visited a school and met with organisations and NGOs helping civilians and children cope with the consequences of an ongoing war that has changed their lives forever. Ukrainians are trying to carry on with their lives sometimes without basic means, or even without a home.
Rudik's party Golos is documenting war crimes like sexual violence, civilians marked with white arms other atrocities to ensure nobody is forgotten.
At the same time, political activity goes on in Ukraine with herself and her collages putting themselves in danger every time they attend voting sessions in the Rada (Parliament).
Rudik highlighted how important is EU's financial aid for the defense and recovery of the country and she feels glad by the unanimous support of all her counterparts in ALDE Party and the Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament. I stand with Ukraine on its fight for peace and negotiations for EU accession.
